With a bite force of 3700 psi, almost 4 times more than a Lion, crocodiles are born to be flesh eaters but if i tell you there’s a crocodile somewhere in India who is Pure Vegetarian. Would you believe me!
Babiya, a crocodile that lives in the lake surrounding the Ananthapura Lake Temple, is the only known Vegetarian crocodile in the world. Built in the 9th century, the Ananthapura Lake Temple in Kasaragod district of Kerala is said to be guarded by a crocodile from last 150 years. Only one crocodile lives in the lake at a time. As soon as one dies, a new crocodile appears. No one knows from where these crocodiles come in the lake.People say that only the fortunate ones get a chance to see the crocodile.
Babiya has been guarding the temple for more than 60 years as per the localities and the temple staff. She lives only on the ‘Temple Prasadam‘ offered to her twice a day. According to temple staff, she is fed rice and jaggery and is harmless to anyone, even to the fishes living in the lake. Chandra Prakash, a temple staff, has been feeding her for about 10 years now & puts the ball of rice right into her mouth.
Stories believed by the Localities
Babiya spends most of the time inside this cave. As per the legends she is guarding the cave where Lord Krishna disappeared.
Once Sree Vilvamangalathu Swami, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, was performing ‘Tapasya’ for his lord. While he was praying, Lord Krishna appeared in the form of a little boy & started irritating him. Being annoyed by the behavior of the little boy, the devotee pushed the him aside. The boy immediately disappeared into a nearby cave and then the truth was dawned on the saint. The cave into which Lord Krishna is said to have disappeared still exists in Ananthanaga Lake temple. The crocodile is believed to quietly guards the entrance and the shrine.
A British soldier shot dead the Divine crocodile in the lake and died as a revenge by Lord Anantha
In 1945, during British Rule, a British soldier shot dead the crocodile. The soldier died within few days by a snake bite. People believe it to be the curse of the serpent god Anantha. Soon another crocodile appeared in the lake.
Yes, it is hard to believe upon the story of a Harmless and vegetarian crocodile but India is a land of miracles and Babiya is undoubtedly one of them.
